Alcatel was pioneer
in building the telecom industry in China which resulted in substantial
both way business and creative advanced co-operation.Co-operation with
China generated business for Alcatel that is worth many billions of Euros
up to date.I recommend the country to young Europeans as a commercial
opportunity.
EIGHT MILESTONES IN A 20 YEAR STORY
Arriving in June 1978 in Beijing it took us five years to conclude the
first major joint venture contract and I consider following 3 events as
key to the successful contract negotiations:
1) Willingness from the Belgian partner to provide the latest technology
and its updates during 15 years;
2) Agreement by the Chinese authorities to introduce "the
substitute principle" for infant industries, facing out after 6 years,
which solved the hard-currency problem.
3) Successful conclusion by the Belgian government and Belgian
partner in convincing the USA and Cocom that the advanced technology was
well defined controlled and could consequently be transferred.
4) The business license was obtained in December 1983 and after
a first 24-hours-board meeting the adventure could start
5) The hand-over of the first locally produced and engineered exchange
in Hefei in December 1987 was the start of a breathtaking growth, resulting
in doubling the output capacity during 3 consecutive years
6) The agreement reached in 1992 (5 years ahead of due date) to
extend the cooperation with another 15 years was a confirmation of the
good understanding and great involvement and willingness to engage by
all shareholders upto 2013;
7) The inauguration of Pudong-premises in 1996, reflected the ambition
and the size of the Chinese market by starting up a multi product production
unit having the biggest capacity in the world under one roof;
8) The vision of the Chinese shareholder to invest in low cost-Chinese
areas and in Europe is a guarantee for the financial and technological
success and further enlarging the important successful network;
